Photographing a Live Fitness Class at True40 Studio

I was invited to attend a class at True40 Studio and photograph it as it happened. It was my first time taking a barre-style class, and I went in thinking it would be manageable something light that I could ease into while also focusing on capturing content. It was not light. But being in the class instead of standing off to the side changed the way I approached everything.

Photographing in Real Time

There’s no pause button in a workout class. Everything is happening at once movement, transitions, small adjustments and you have to work within that. There’s no directing, no resetting a moment to try again. It becomes less about control and more about awareness.

You start to look for patterns. The rhythm of the class, the way people move through each sequence, the moments where focus shifts or resets. Those in-between seconds end up being just as important as the bigger movements.

The Space

True40 Studio is designed for movement, but it naturally works well for photography. The space is open, minimal, and filled with consistent light. Nothing feels overly styled or distracting, which allows the focus to stay on what’s actually happening in the room. In environments like this, simplicity does most of the work.
